Bandag Europe NV, a global retread solutions leader subsidiary, announced plans to shutter its retread production facility in Lanklaar around the first half of 2025. The decision comes amid a decade-long decline in the European retread market, exacerbated by imports from East Asia and soaring energy costs.

The Belgian plant, which employs 111 workers, will be consolidated with Bandag’s Stargard, Poland, facility. This move is aimed at streamlining operations and restoring profitability in a market beset by overcapacity and uncompetitive production costs.

The company said that the market has continued to deteriorate despite previous efforts to address these challenges, including a transformation plan for the Lanklaar site in 2021. The closure is seen as a necessary step to ensure the long-term sustainability of Bandag’s retread business in Europe.

Jan Deneir, Plant Manager Bandag Lanklaar, said: “Bandag’s management is conscious of the potential impact of the envisaged closure. We intend to manage the process with respect and consideration for the impacted employees. We aim to conduct a constructive and transparent dialogue with the social partners throughout the information and consultation process. In the event of a closure, Bandag is committed to developing a fair social plan and will put the necessary efforts in place to support the affected employees in their search for a new job. We will also be providing psychological support for anyone who might require it.”

Bandag remains committed to retreading as a sustainable solution for commercial vehicles. By consolidating its European production, the company hopes to regain market competitiveness and focus on high-quality offerings, it added.

ENSO, a London-based tyre manufacturer engaged in the production of sustainable tyres specially designed for electric vehicles (EVs), has launched its new ENSO Premium range of EV-specific ultra-high-performance (UHP) tyres aimed at drivers of high-performance EVs such as the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

Specifically designed for electric passenger vehicles, the ENSO Premium range comes with A/A EU-label ratings for both energy efficiency and wet grip. The tyres are designed to provide safety, increased range and a reduced total cost of ownership. Kraton Corporation, a leading global sustainable producer of specialty polymers and high-value bio-based products derived from pine wood pulping co-products, has announced a general price hike in North America for its SBS, SIS and HSBC product lines with effect from 1 May 2025.

Following a careful analysis of the effects of recently implemented tariffs, related cost increases and a conclusion that the company cannot independently absorb these repercussions, Kraton is adopting these pricing hikes, according to a company statement. The recently launched fifth-generation Pirelli P Zero UHP tyre has claimed the top spot in an independent comparative test conducted by Tyre Reviews for its standout grip, braking and driving comfort.

The new P Zero performed exceptionally well in a variety of categories when tested with a number of top UHP rivals. The tyre led the industry in wet grip and dry braking, and it performed exceptionally well in both wet and dry handling. Tyre reviews highlighted Pirelli's combination of safety, control and ride comfort, praising its excellent performance in real-world scenarios. The new P Zero received the highest ratings for braking, balance and stability in dry weather. Out of all the tyres that were tested, it had the best stopping power. Wet performance was almost as impressive, with the P Zero winning braking tests and demonstrating good resistance to aquaplaning, especially while turning. The new P Zero is developed using Pirelli’s most sophisticated design procedures to date.
