Mexico Imposes Anti-Dumping Duties on Chinese Tyres

Mexico Imposes Anti-Dumping Duties on Chinese Tyres

Mexico has imposed anti-dumping duties on imported passenger cars and light truck tyres from China, effective 1 October 2024. The highest tax rate is 32.24 percent.

The duties apply to new radial pneumatic tyres with a nominal inner diameter of 13 to 22 inches. The investigation into Chinese tyre dumping began in November 2022, following a complaint filed by the Brazilian subsidiary of a leading tyre company and the Brazilian National Rubber Industry Association.

The Mexican government determined that Chinese tyre manufacturers were selling their products in Mexico at below-market prices, harming domestic producers. Most Chinese tyre manufacturers face an anti-dumping duty rate of 14.82 percent, but individual rates vary. Zhengdao Tire has the lowest rate at 5.18 percent, while Zhaoqing Junhong, Hankook Tire Chongqing Factory, and other manufacturers face the highest rate of 32.24 percent.

Shortfall In Tyre Statistics Highlights Need for Reliable Data: German Rubber Industry Association

Shortfall In Tyre Statistics Highlights Need for Reliable Data: German Rubber Industry Association

The German Rubber Industry Association (wdk) has identified a significant shortfall in used tyre statistics in Germany, raising concerns about data accuracy on tyre recycling and potential illegal exports.

Despite the ongoing trend toward recycling old tyres, disposal companies and recyclers have reported declining quantities on the German market. Evidence suggests that some tyres are being exported to non-EU countries for incineration or non-environmentally friendly recycling methods.

The wdk’s latest statistics for 2023 reveal a discrepancy of 87,000 tonnes of tyres, the whereabouts of which cannot be accounted for. This figure aligns with the estimated 100,000 tons of missing tyres reported by disposal companies and recyclers.

“The latest old tyre statistics from the wdk now seem to confirm this assessment for 2023. For the first time, we have identified a significant quantity of tyres, amounting to 87,000 tonnes, whose whereabouts are unclear. This volume cannot be reconciled with either the official statistics or the quantities reported by the disposal companies. Rather, this figure is close to the estimated 100,000 tonnes of missing old tyres that old tyre disposal companies and recyclers assume,” says Stephan Rau, Technical Director at wdk.

To address this issue, the wdk has been advocating for stricter regulations on used tyre collection and disposal. The association calls for certified disposal companies to collect and pre-sort tyres according to their intended use, ensuring that they are reused or recycled responsibly.

The Allianz Zukunft Reifen (AZuR) initiative also supports these efforts, emphasizing the importance of reliable data for effective tyre recycling. By implementing stricter regulations, Germany can strengthen its circular economy for used tyres and promote sustainable practices.
