Smithers Moves Suzhou Operations To New Building

Leading testing, consulting, information, and compliance service provider Smithers moved its tyre, wheel, and product testing operation in Suzhou, China into a new 7,200 square meter building in the Xiangcheng district.

The new premise will help Smithers to continue its growth plans and ongoing commitment to high-level services for its global clients.

The new building expands each testing group’s laboratory footprint. The size of the product testing lab has increased by 90%, with plans to invest in more testing equipment to further expand testing capabilities, said Smithers.

 In addition to laboratory space, the new building includes state-of-the-art classrooms and conference rooms for on-site training and industry meetings.

 As part of this expansion, Smithers also added a new slip angle and camber angle tyre durability machine to its Suzhou-based tyre and wheel testing laboratory. This new tyre durability testing machine is able to provide dynamic camber angle and dynamic slip angle control from -5 degrees to 5 degrees, expanding the lab’s test capabilities to meet the requirements of OEMs. The new equipment has a maximum speed of 350 kilometers or 217 miles per hour and a maximum testing load of 3000 kilograms or 6614 pounds. The tyre and wheel lab also expanded its IPLR chamber to accommodate truck and bus tires in addition to passenger and light truck tyres.

We are already working to determine the next steps of our plan to invest in additional testing capabilities,” said Derek Read, Vice President of Asia Operations, Materials Science and Engineering, Smithers. “Additionally, we look forward to hosting our industry partners and peers in our new onsite training and gathering annex in the future.”

Both the product testing laboratory and the tyre and wheel testing laboratory are fully operational in the new space and are already conducting testing work for clients.

Smithers established tire and wheel testing operations in Suzhou in 2011 to serve its existing global clients and a growing market in Asia. Tyre testing capabilities include endurance and high-speed tire testing, plunger/bead un-seat measurement, oven aged durability testing, rolling resistance testing, air permeation testing, government compliance, burst testing, footprint, and competitive benchmarking. Wheel testing capabilities include radial, rotary, impact, and corrosion.

The product testing laboratory in Suzhou was first opened in early 2019. Product testing capabilities include pressure, vibration, temperature, impulse, burst, leak, vacuum, fluid compatibility, fatigue, corrosion, and cleanliness.

    Goodyear Launches Online Tool To Support Fleet Cost And CO₂ Reduction

    Goodyear has launched the Value Simulator, an online tool designed to assist fleet operators in visualising the possible financial and environmental advantages of upgrading their mobility and tyre solutions. The simulator is now available on the company's truck tyre website and is a component of Goodyear Total Mobility, the company's end-to-end solution for commercial fleets.

    According to Goodyear, the tool takes into account typical fuel consumption and cost, fleet size and breakdown frequency, vehicle mileage and maintenance trends and the kind of transportation and route profile. After data is entered, the simulator instantly estimates the potential decrease of CO2 emissions, maintenance and fuel costs, and annual breakdown-related cost savings. Additionally, customers can customise simulations according to their own fleet characteristics.

    The CO₂ reductions are based on theoretical fuel usage using EU tyre label values as a baseline; real savings may vary depending on factors including driver behaviour, vehicle condition and road conditions. Additionally, based on user interaction, the simulator suggests appropriate Goodyear goods and services. These recommendations can be used as a springboard for talks with Goodyear's staff in order to do a more thorough study and develop a customised fleet plan.

          TÜV SÜD Expands Test Laboratory In Frankfurt

          TÜV SÜD has expanded its test laboratory in Frankfurt am Main and unveiled new testing facilities at an Open Lab Day at the site, giving customers and employees an exclusive insight into the new state-of-the-art testing environments. The expansion strengthens TÜV SÜD’s position as a leading provider of independent testing and certification services.

          Car charging plugs can now be tested in the lab to assess features like weather resistance, mechanical strength and electrical safety. To guarantee the endurance and durability of charging plugs and other parts, the new lab can also conduct crash testing on them. The inclusion of performance testing for tiny batteries is another significant development. Basic functional analysis will be the main emphasis of these tests at first, but in the second part of the year, comprehensive safety and performance evaluations will be included.
